Dunbar Gram, DVM, DACVD, MRCVS


 

Dr. Gram received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with high honors in from the College of Veterinary Medicine in Auburn University. Following veterinary school, he completed a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Illinois. Dr. Gram then completed a residency in veterinary dermatology at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Before moving to Virginia, he served on the staff as a clinical instructor in dermatology at NCSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. He has also taught dermatology at the University of Prince Edward Island and the Royal (Dick) College of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland. In addition to his clinical and management duties at his four private practices in Virginia, Dr. Gram continues to lecture and perform research in the pharmaceutical industry to better provide patients with the latest and best dermatological care available. He has published many book chapters and journal articles as well as lectured throughout North America, Europe and Asia

Practical Pruritus : Parasites and Allergies


Description:

Fleas are an undesirable pest that cause discomfort and are responsible for disease transmission, flea allergy dermatitis and affect other skin diseases.  Despite the array of flea control products, flea control continues to be a problem and flea allergy a common cause of pruritus in dogs and cats.  This presentation will review the disease organisms transmitted by fleas, and review the mechanisms and clinical findings associated with flea allergy dermatitis.  The impact of flea infestation on other skin diseases and the role of fleas in chronically pruritic pets will also be covered.  Key points of flea biology and information on effective flea control and methods to minimize fleas or their bites will be covered.
