Speakers:

Jen Mahon, DVM Diplomate ACVECC from Center for Veterinary Specialty Care

Speaker Bio:

Management of the acute respiratory crisis can be one of the most stressful experiences a clinician may face.  Knowing how to manage these cases can truly be the difference between the life and death of a patient.  This lecture will discuss the pathophysiology of hypoxemia and ventilation, along with methods of oxygen delivery.  Then we will discuss the various types of respiratory crisis that may occur in dogs and cats, starting with the upper airway and progressing to pulmonary parenchymal and pleural space diseases.  We will discuss the diagnostic tests and emergency procedures that can be used to save these patients lives.  A case-based approach will be utilized to facilitate applicability and understanding. The clinician should come away with an enhanced knowledge of respiratory crisis and improved confidence in how to manage these difficult cases.

Dr. Jen Mahon completed veterinary school at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012, and completed a one-year internship in Albuquerque, NM.  She returned to Tufts for a three-year residency in Emergency and Critical Care and achieved Board Certification in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2016.  She joined the team at the Center for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care in October of 2016.  There, her duties include management of critical care cases and consultation with other specialty services.  She is also in charge of the blood bank and a portion of the continuing education program at the practice.  She serves as a mentor for other clinicians, and runs the advanced therapies initiative, focused on ventilator therapies in critical illness.

Dr. Mahon's research has included the evaluation of patient vaccine status in the ICU, endothelin levels in pulmonary hypertension, and lactate kinetics in trauma.  She is the recipient of the Jeff Proux award for excellence in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Mahon has always had a great passion for teaching, and has lectured at the ACVIM forum, the IVECCS annual meeting, the National Meeting of the Comparative Respiratory Society, and at the North Carolina State Veterinary Conference.

Dr. Mahon also volunteers at the Perot Museum of nature and science and has run several food drives for the North Texas food bank.

She is very excited to be lecturing to the Veterinarians of Collin County on Management of respiratory crisis!
